Due to the generosity of our members over the years, we have accumulated some reserves which we would like to give to the local community. Could we help you? Frequently Asked Questions
Who do we fund?
Our community fund is targeted to help community groups that are reliant on donations and fundraising for their activities. This includes registered charities large and small. It also includes “voluntary and community groups” as defined by websites such as Community Action and Third Sector Protect. This means groups or organisations which work for the public benefit and are:
What do we fund?
Our microgrants are intended to be spent on small, stand-alone projects. These projects may, of course, be integrated into a larger set of activities, but the funds we supply should enable the entirety of the project to be completed. In other words, our microgrants should not be used to top up or fill out larger grant projects.
Where do we fund?
Our grants are intended for the same local area where our members reside. North East Humanists covers a large stretch of the country that includes Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham, and Teesside. We want our grants to go to organisations that are headquartered here and be used for projects that target communities here.

- Structured — A constitution or other “governing document” sets the rules for how the group is organised and run.
- Self-governing — The group is independent from any other organisation and free to appoint their own management committee.
- Not for Profit — The groups are often or largely managed by volunteers who are only reimbursed for their volunteer expenses. Some salaried staff may be part of the management structure, but no one within the group will receive profits from the group’s activities. Any profits made must be reinvested in the group or the community, such as with a community interest company (CIC).
