Poverty
It’s no secret that the North East experiences high rates of poverty. But a report from IPPR North, a regional think tank, was a call to action for us. We learned that people in the North-East of England are more likely to need help buying food than those living anywhere else in Britain.
Not only that, but almost two in five babies, children and young people across the North East (38 %) are growing up in poverty - the large majority from working families. The gap between the regional and UK child poverty average has reached a 20 year high.
Our response was three-fold. In the Autumn of 2024 we:
• gifted ten microgrants of £500 to local organisations working to improve the lives of people in poverty:
• wrote to every Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the forthcoming General Election to ask what their party would do to address poverty
• ran a conference – Poverty, a Humanist Concern, to explore the issue in more detail. Speakers included Amanda Bailey, Director of the North East Child Poverty Commission.
